My motto for New Year’s Eve is “go big or go home!” What better evening to break out of your fashion comfort zone and wear something that is truly show-stopping? As in, you walk through the door and everyone is swooning and wondering, who’s that girl (my subtle Madonna shout-out)?

For a while after I had my kids I kind of let go of the excitement of getting dressed for a big night out. Such a waste of time, I thought. I’ll just wear what’s in my closet, put on the same makeup and not make a fuss over it. And it was fine. I looked good, had nice time and called it a night. Then one year all my girlfriends were emailing and texting back and forth about what to wear to an event, how they were going to style their hair and whether they should go with a smoky eye or bold lip. And suddenly I got swept up in all the excitement and planning… and it was fun. Sort of a mini escape from the mundane and the routine – the ultimate, shiny bit of mental self-care. F**k the facial and massage! I want to anticipate a night of socializing, dancing, and creating a full fashion “look” – down the earrings, shoes and cosmetics.

And you don’t have to spend a fortune to do it (though you can!). We curated some of top dresses and jumpsuits out right now that make a huge statement but are not over the top. If you usually go black, try pale pink this year. If minis are in regular rotation, slip on a maxi. If metallics always seemed slightly daunting, shine on in a Marilyn-esque golden gown. Point is, have a blast before the New Year’s party even starts!
