If there was ever a poster child for free-loving, girl power it was the designer Sonia Rykiel, who recently passed away at the age of 86. She started her design career by creating a fitted pregnancy dress for herself at a time when maternity clothes were made primarily to conceal bulging midriffs. She wanted to design clothing that did not restrict women – her knitwear moved with the body, which was in stark contrast to other clothing in 1968. Also, at a time when working moms were not celebrated she totally embraced the role, becoming the ultimate Girl Boss who broke rules and gave women permission to be free with their fashion.

Rykiel never took clothing too seriously – there was always a playfulness to them, so what better brand to design for MINIs who never cease in wanting to express their own creative freedom? A true family affair, in 1983 the childrenswear line Rykiel Enfant came to be under the creative eye of her daughter Nathalie. These are clothes that are funky and fun in a quintessential Parisian cool way. As an homage to a designer who was a pioneer in forging her own path, we celebrate Rykiel with her back to school designs for our own female MINI masters in the making!
