While we may not realize it our hair can burn under the summer sun, same as skin, resulting in weakened and dried out tresses. While summer may be underway, it’s not too late to take care of your mane by reversing damage and protecting it going forward with a few simple measures. And trust, as a hair obsessed beach-worshipper myself I take good measure to hydrate and preserve my hair same as the rest of my body. Bonus is, all of the non-toxic products below can be used on your MINI to keep their hair in top condition too!

Protect with an Oil Hair Serum

This serum is the ultimate in sun and water protection, basically it uses a combination of oils to guard your hair from damaging summer elements. This serum guards and hydrates simultaneously via a host of nourishing ingredients such as jojoba, organic tea tree, and lemongrass oils. Easy – apply a few drops to your hair/scalp before a dip in the pool or a beach-hang.

After-Swim Chlorine Care Shampoo

Before going swimming make sure to wet your hair with pure water to prevent the hair from absorbing the chlorinated water. Then, after swimming wash your hair with clarifying sulfate-free shampoo finished off with one-minute cold water rinse to seal in natural oils. If you’re not swimming, avoid over-shampooing your hair and stripping it of moisture – try rinsing every other day, rather than shampooing. Perfect for mama and tot too, as this product is free of oxidants, ammonia, parabens, silicone and colorants. Also as a bonus for moms… it gives natural hair a glow without false highlights after you use a few times 🙂

Leave-In Treatment

Try a leave-in treatment that nourishes the hair after you’ve washed it. This product also works wonders for new moms that might be experiencing hair loss. It aids to strengthen, promotes hair growth and shine as well as smoothness. And again, all organic blend of aloe, tannic, and fulvic acids!

Treat Hair at Night with Coconut Oil

It’s no secret that coconut oil is basically the answer to everything! Dr Jackson’s 100% organic formula melts on touch, hydrates, strengthens hair and counters sun damage. Apply coconut oil at night to the ends of your hair and by morning your locks will be in prime condition.

Scalp Sunscreen

Your scalp is the same as the rest of your body and requires a decent slathering of SPF. Massage a small amount of sunscreen onto your part before hitting up the sun. productPageSPF30Hair Balm

Use a product to nourish the scalp and hair like this regenerating balm which will bring dehydrated hair back to life. Loaded with shea butter, cocoa butter, rare prickly pear seed oil, rice bran oil and almond oil – it has everything your hair/head is craving. And what’s even better, it’s not sticky and doesn’t leave a residue like most serums and waxes.

Hair mask

After a a few days spent drenched in sun and surf, treat your tired tresses to an intense moisture-rich mask complex that will repair your locks in minuets. Love this product as they are perfect for travel in packaged in eight individual sachets. Also fun to do a spa night with MINI as this mask is paraben and phthalates free.

Hair Cream

Chia Seeds

What nourished and vibrant hair? Do it from the inside out with healthy fats like Chia seeds which not only supply great whole-beauty fat, but also omega-3 fatty acids that promote circulation, ensuring that maximum nutrition gets to the root of your hair. Plus, they provide antioxidants that help protect your hair from environmental damage. Add to smoothies or over fruit for a double dose of yum and benefits.

Pumpkin Seeds

In combination with your chia seeds, you also need B vitamins to grow lush, beautiful hair. Pumpkin seeds are loaded with biotin (B7), which not only promotes the growth of strong, resilient locks, but also encourages growth. In addtion pumpkin seeds contain vitamin C, which assists to produce sebum, the body’s natural oil that conditions hair.

 Dry Hair Naturally

As much as possible aim to dry your air naturally versus getting a blow-out. If ever there is a time to avoid, summer is it!

Wear a Hat

Cover your hair as much as possible to avoid sun exposure – after all who doesn’t like a reason shop, especially if it is in the name of self-care.

Get a Trim

First thing to consider when prepping hair for summer sun is to get a trim – keeping your hair healthy.

Don’t Use Dry Shampoo with Abandon

Aim for no more than twice a week as many dry shampoos can irritate and inflame hair follicles – not to mention seriously dehydrate your hair, so save it for after those super sweaty workouts rather than a daily application.

Drink Hot Water

It’s key to stay hydrated, so your hair stays moisturized and shiny and doesn’t dry out. The more detoxified your body and blood are, the easier it is for nutrients to circulate and get to your hair follicles.

Why hot water? Excessive cold can contract your stomach, impairing it from properly secreting enzymes and impairing your entire digestive system to a degree—which is not so great for helping your hair get the nutrition it needs! In contrast, hot water (in the form of herbal teas and hot water with lemon) helps enhance cleansing.
